O'Grady's father was Jim O'Grady. Her mother, Jan, was a financial planner. She grew up in Wheaton and attended Wheaton North School. She graduated in 1981. Her appearances in commercials prior to moving into Los Angeles in 1986. The first role she had was as a model for Montgomery Ward. She also appeared in several advertisements.
